Langley Animal Protection Society
The Langley Animal Protection Society (LAPS) was established in 2003 to serve the needs of the Langley community - both animal and human. Our primary function is to provide Animal Control and Bylaw Enforcement services for both the Township and the City of Langley. As the service provider, we perform a number of functions including managing a humane animal shelter (Langley Animal Shelter), responding to animal related complaints, collecting stray dogs and livestock, and operating an adoption centre for unclaimed or owner relinquished cats and dogs.
LAPS is a registered non-profit charitable organization that is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors. The Board is active in setting policy and planning the long term business activity of the Society. The day-to-day operation of the humane animal shelter, adoption centre, training centre and bylaw enforcement is accomplished by a group of 12 paid professional staff. This includes the Shelter Manager, 3 Animal Control Officers, 6 Animal Care Attendants, 1 Behaviorist and 1 Receptionist.
Since 2003, LAPS has provided temporary shelter for more than 3800 dogs and 1600 cats at our facility in Aldergrove. That is an average of 900 dogs and 400 cats per year. Of these animals, 80% of the dogs were united with their original owners but only 2% of the cats found their way home. Care for these animals is provided by our professional staff and our dedicated volunteers. Currently, there are 226 LAPS members and 358 registered volunteers. On January 14, 2008, the Township of Langley Mayor and Council rewarded the hard work and commitment of both staff and volunteers by approving a proposal for the construction of a new state of the art animal shelter to be completed by November 2008.
