Health Care & Exercise

Every dog owner wants their dog to live a long and happy life. Here you’ll find a number of articles on exercise, grooming and overall health care that will help you ensure the best health for your dog.

When you feed your dog a healthy diet, it shows. PEDIGREE® foods are complete, balanced and great tasting to provide all the nutrients your dog needs.

While most pet owners understand how important a nutritious diet is to their dog, it is often difficult to tell how healthy your dog is just by looking at them. It’s also hard to understand all the elements which contribute to keep man’s best friend healthy and happy. That’s why we’ve compiled this section to explain how all the elements in a healthy diet come together

Proteins build and repair body tissues such as muscle and skin. Fats provide concentrated energy and contribute to a healthy coat. Carbohydrates are good sources of the B-vitamins, which contribute to efficient metabolism. Fibre improves digestive health. Water is required for all body fluids. Minerals build strong teeth and bones. Vitamins help regulate the body’s processes and strengthen the immune system.

A wagging tail is one way to tell your dog’s healthy, but here are some slightly more accurate ways to be in the know about how your dog’s doing!

COAT Although there are many different types of coat, in general, a healthy coat is full, shiny, pliable, soft to the touch, not easily matted, free of dandruff and without excessive oiliness.
SKIN Healthy skin is flexible and smooth. The skin pigment varies by breed and colour of dog, ranging from ranging from pink, black, brown or spotted.
EYES Healthy eyes are bright and clear. The whites of the eyes should not be yellowish. The eyelids should be a healthy pink colour.
EARS On inspection the insides of the ears should appear clean and free from the build up of dirt or wax.
TEETH Healthy teeth are clean and strong, without tartar build-up.
GUMS Healthy gums are firm and can be pink, black or spotted just like a dog's skin.
BODY CONDITION A healthy, well-exercised dog has a firm well-muscled body. Your dog has the ideal body fat if you can easily feel the outline of the ribs when you run your fingertips against the direction of the coat, applying light pressure.
ENERGY A healthy dog is active and alert with abundant energy. Every owner knows their individual dog is keen to carry out its normal routine and play its favourite games. A sudden change in behaviour may be an early sign of illness or unhappiness.
